Freiburg, a summer symphony

Freiburg, a summer symphony

Germany. A month-long vacation, divided into 6 countries, brought us to Freiburg, which was on the shortlist of medieval cities we had to visit. The road up to this point took us among the large vineyards that produced grapes of all varieties. Due to the favorable climate, the wine produced in the area is famous all over the world. Numerous festivals that celebrate this beverage are so popular that they take place every year from July to August. Once we reached the medieval gates, we entered into the old city that introduces you to the atmosphere of old times.

Freiburg is translating by "autonomous fortified city". Founded in 1120 by the Duke of Zahringen, it was built to be an open trade city. A Baroque painting attracted our attention. A chatty local told us that there is a legend related to it. It is said that a trader wanted to buy the city with bags in which he knew there was gold, but his wife had replaced it with sand and millstones.

We walked on the cobbled streets, stopping at the terraces that came out in our way whenever thirst or hunger made their presence felt. Okay, I admit it! More appetite than hunger, because amazing smells grabbed us without escape.

We arrived in Munsterplatz, a charming pedestrian market surrounded by historical monuments. We admired the old, colorful buildings that breathed history through all the pores. Every morning, from Monday to Saturday, the place is filled with traders. Munsterplatz was almost laughed at by the Allied bombings in 1944. Fortunately, the church remained intact.

Wentzingerhaus, a baroque house built in 1761 by Johann Christian Wentzinger - painter, sculptor and architect, later transformed into a museum of Freiburg's history, had the same luck.

Every day the market is full of friendly locals and happy tourists, and the terraces are overcrowded. Young people relax on the cubic stone and enjoy the time spent in the midst of their friends.

Music is heard everywhere. Whether you are near the church, the place preferred by the street artists or you relax on a terrace on the side streets and listen to professionals as they sing with passion, the effect is the same. Musical notes carry you into their world and tell you the story trapped in an instrument. You listen and can not leave anymore. You don't even realize when he caught you. The day is over. You are sad for one moment, but you smile as soon as you realize that the night is long.
