The silence in the middle of the Indian mangroves
Ali Bird Sanctuary Hall is one of the places we had already on the list when we went to Goa. Said and done! The long-awaited morning came and here we are in the middle of the mangroves. A new world is revealed to us. Not at all shy, not at all scary. Life follows its course and beyond the surface of the water, and we pass without making a sound and sinking deeper and deeper into the forest. A panel at the entrance puts us in thoughts, but it does not make us think to return. We seemed like the crocodile in the picture, attentive to each sound, although the planks under our feet scratch. And scrapes. A cold chill accompanies us, but we get used to it quickly and we barely notice it. Crabs of all sizes and shapes running everywhere and enter the huge holes that can be seen at every turn. I run back and forth trying in vain to catch them in pictures, while Dodo reads the information on the panels placed on either side of the access bridge to nowhere. We seem to be heading for something, but nothing changes. The same mirror image, so perfect. A maze, from which we begin to think that we will never go out, comes to life when a bird makes deafening noises. It is just us and the surrounding world. This thing intrigues us, but no matter how strange it is, we never, ever presume to return.
When the backwoods leaves the sky, we smile and continue our journey. In the middle of the mangroves is quiet, our peace, because theirs cannot be. Life in the middle of the estuary is full of sounds, shadows, and many question marks. It seems deserted, but you feel like moving. It seems safe, but you don't know what lies beyond. Shadows and lights. The sun's rays stubbornly penetrate and sometimes even succeed. The mosquitoes are buzzing and we already have signs on the hands. Whatever will be, will be we are saying in unison and move on. A boat appears from nowhere, tied to a dock, and we wonder if in it we will continue our adventure.
Suddenly I see shadows. A woman sees herself in the middle of a mangrove nursery. We breathe in relief that we are not alone and realize that we are already heading towards the exit. From here, a new adventure begins.
We jump in the boat that is waiting for us and we begin to slip on the glitter of the water in search of birds that do not contain to appear. Whether they have already been in the shade or are waiting on a bat to dry their feathers, after they leaned on a fish who served them as lunch, we see them everywhere. The boatman does not stop commenting. He sees every bird that is hidden and tells us about it. We are fascinated. Nature does not cease to amaze us. However, I have only one regret. The camera zoom does not cope, so I promise to be more prepared next time.
