Giethoorn, Little Venice of the Netherlands
Giethoorn, the fairytale village in the north of the Netherlands, is only an hour away from Amsterdam.
If you have at least one extra day at your disposal and want to stay away from the noise of the cosmopolitan city, the Giethoorn is the ideal solution. A quiet, idyllic village, painted in green, with accents of colorful flowers and the smell of raw grass. Traditional houses with reed roofs, detached from the specialized magazines, leads on both sides of the canals. The Dutch have a true cult of striving for perfection. The atmosphere in Giethoorn is meant to cut your breath most of the time and make you want more and more to discover what's beyond the shore.
The laughter of tourists, trills of birds and blinking of water when the electric boat is moving slowly but surely in the direction ahead, wake you up to reality. A reality that unfolds in front of your eyes every moment. You take a deep breath and you want to make yourself unseen and to admire freely without disturbing.
Reed, lotuses and birds that most appear in front of your eyes even when you expect less.
After the boat ride is over, you may get lost on one or more of the approximately 180 bridges that connect the village like a spider web. You can walk or rent a bicycle. Keep in mind that the bridges are very narrow and the hordes of tourists do not leave much room for pedaling!
If you are tired, stop at a restaurant or a terrace! The smell of pancakes or grilled meat will make your choice difficult.
The distance from Amsterdam to Giethoorn is 120 km and if you are not by car, you can opt for either bus or train. The approximate price is 30 euros. To rent a boat the price is 25 euros/hour and 20/euros starting with the second. There are several parking lots on the edge of the old village where you can park your car (about 4 euros per day). In Giethoorn you can also visit the local history museum, the geology museum and that of the vintage cars.
